What Are The Benefits of Vitamins?

What are the benefits of vitamins in supplement form?  I have heard a number of people in the mainstream community downplaying the importance of nutritional supplements.  But, I could right a book about the health benefits of supplementation, just from my own personal experiences.  

Here's just a quick look at some of the common health complaints that people have and how they can be relieved naturally, by striving for optimum nutrition.  I have also included a look at the cancer preventative benefits of the antioxidant.

Depression

Millions of Americans take prescription anti-depressants on a daily basis, despite the unwanted side effects they commonly experience.  They do it, because it is the only option that their doctors recommend.

In the doctor's defense, they do what they do to avoid malpractice.  They must prescribe the course of treatment that is generally accepted by the mainstream medical community.  Luckily, we are started to see more naturopathic and holistic practitioners.

The cause of depression is unknown.  It is thought to be related to a deficiency of the neurotransmitter serotonin.  Prescription anti-depressants prevent serotonin from breaking down.

Cancer Prevention

What are the benefits of vitamins E and C in cancer prevention?  The antioxidant is our best defense against free radical damage to the DNA of our cells.  It is that DNA damage that mutates the cells.  When the cell reproduces, something that happens every day throughout our bodies, it may become a cancer cell.  Continued damage increases that risk.

Recently, there was a new study that disputed the findings of thousands of other studies concerning the antioxidant benefit of vitamins E and C for cancer prevention.  The vitamins used in the study were synthetic, not the naturally occurring form that had been used in other studies.
